Nowruz Festival

What is Nowruz?
Nowruz is a known as a celebration for the Persian, Kazakh and Kurdish New Year; in addition to marking the first day of Spring in the year, typically falling around mid to late March. Nowruz itself stands for "New Day" and celebrates the coming of Spring and the renewal of nature. This year, the new year fell on March 20th at 8:27pm. People from various cultures will come together (often in traditional robes) and dance around a fire and wish one another a happy new year with gifts. People like to cook their culture's traditional food during this event and share it with loved ones.
The Event Details.
On Wednesday 26th March 2014, Breaking Barriers went to INTO Newcastle to document and take in the atmosphere of Nowruz. This Nowruz Festival was organised and ran by the Kazakh Society, to celebrate Kurdish and Kazakh cultures in Newcastle and the surrounding areas. We interviewed, filmed, photographed and took part in the festivities. It was a wonderful night with fantastic entertainment, great company and delicious food. INTO Newcastle hosts numerous events like this to recognise miscellaneous cultures at Newcastle University.
