Hazhan Ahmed

Hi I'm Hazhan

Hazhan started pursuing a career as a journalist whilst she was studying Media at Salahaddin University, in Iraq’s Kurdistan region. Initially, She worked as a reporter for‘Rudaw’, a weekly newspaper, and then for a women’s magazine named ‘Warvin’. In 2011, Hazhan became a co-host presenter for an entertainment programme featured on the satellite channel ‘NRT’. Working for this widely-watched private channel, raised Hazhan’s interest in that medium. At the same time she realised that there is so much more to learn about the media industry.

Hazhan specialises in reporting, making interviews and documentary films; demonstrating this in her graduation dissertation, which discussed documentary films made by ‘Al Jazeera’. Currently, Hazhan is undertaking a Masters degree in International Multimedia Journalism at Newcastle University, to enhance potential career opportunities and concentrate more on the practical side of journalism ; The fact that she is away from her family and husband, makes studying abroad “the most serious challenge in my entire life”.

She is ambitious to display the new skills she has acquired here, to her fellow journalists and to the newly emerged independent media that is encountering mammoth challenges back in the Kurdistan region. In this project, Hazhan concentrated on filming and editing as her priority role, but also wanted to participate in making interviews and photographing to develop her skills in that area.

The importance of this project: This project gives me an opportunity to discover and understand the life of migrants women in more depth.

Favourite Media Presenter: Christiane Amanpour. She is the Chief International Correspondent and host of CNN International's nightly interview program ‘Amanpour’.The high-level discussions that Amanpour can initiate, impresses Hazhan the most.

Favourite movie: The Pianist (2002). It is such an inspiring movie. The struggle of the main character is reminiscent to the struggles of Hazhan’s countrymen, to survive the genocide of Kurds and the different wars her country has been plunged into.
