ESOL Class
On Tuesday 29th April 2014, Breaking Barriers visited the TOMSS project at JET in Fenham, Newcastle. The ESOL class comes in four stages: Entry Level 1 (For Beginners); Entry Level 2 and 3 (Intermediate) and Level 1 (Not Entry Level).
ESOL is an English language qualification and stands for 'English for speakers of other languages'. Many of the students go on to sit exams and achieve certificates. It has been reported that many of the students choose to further their education in full-time education (Mainstream ESOL). The class we attended was Entry Level 1 for Beginners, which featured the class learning new language and communication skills through the use of arts and craft. The class takes place on a Tuesday morning for three hours.
The students that we interviewed demonstrated to us how the ESOL class had developed their skills from learning communication skills to integrating into the community.
“This ESOL class helps me so much at many aspects like English spelling and speaking, It’s very
practical in my daily life, such as buying tickets when travelling or going shopping. And I’m
glad to recommend this class to my friends” said one of students from Thailand.
“I feeling like making a difference as a qualified English teacher. It is very rewarding to see
them making progress and to help solving their English problems. During the ESOL class, we
usually carry on some roleplay activities to teach students useful phrases and sentences relevant
to their daily life. For example, today’s class is about dialogues seeing a doctor. We’ve tried
some scenes describing symptoms and prescribing drugs” The teacher from the Level-1
ESOL class said.
